How Much Does Tree Pruning Cost in Adelaide? What Actually Moves the Price

Tree pruning in Adelaide is quoted per job, not off a price list, and that frustrates people who just want a number. The honest answer is that two trees of the same species in the same suburb can cost very different amounts to prune, and this post explains why so you can read a quote properly.

What the price is made of

Every quote I write for pruning is built from the same five things.

1. Size and height of the tree

A two-metre Crepe Myrtle pruned from the ground is a short job. A five-metre plum that needs a platform ladder and a pole saw is a half-day. Anything that needs climbing, rigging or a cherry picker is arborist work and is priced accordingly, usually by a different business.

2. How long since it was last pruned

A tree that is pruned every year takes a fraction of the time of one that has been left for a decade. Restoration pruning on a neglected tree is often staged over two or three visits, which costs more in total but gives you a tree worth keeping.

3. Access

Can the tree be reached with a ladder on firm ground? Is it against a fence, over a pool, or hemmed in by a shed? Narrow side access in the older streets of Norwood and St Peters, or a steep block in Athelstone, add time to both the pruning and the clean up.

4. Green waste

Removing and disposing of the prunings is part of the price. A big reduction on a mature tree generates a trailer load or more. If you have a green bin and are happy to take some yourself, say so and the quote will reflect it.

5. Horticulturist or arborist

For fruit trees, ornamentals and small to medium trees, a qualified horticulturist is the right person and the economical one. For large trees, anything near power lines, or trees that may be regulated or significant under South Australian planning law, you need a qualified arborist, and you should expect a higher price for the equipment and the insurance that goes with that work.

Why the cheap quote is usually a lopping quote

If one quote is far lower than the others, it is often because the plan is to cut everything back to stubs. That is fast, and it is also the worst thing you can do to the tree. Lopped trees regrow faster and weaker, need more frequent cutting and often end up removed. Ask any pruner what cuts they intend to make and why, and whether the tree will keep a natural shape.

How to get an accurate quote

  • Say what the tree is, or send a photo. Species changes the technique and the timing.
  • Tell the pruner what you want: more light, less height, fruit at picking height, clearance from the roof.
  • Mention access and whether you have a green bin.
  • Ask for the price to include clean up and removal.

Rough price bands

Without seeing the tree I will not put a number on it, but the shape of the pricing is simple. A single small ornamental or fruit tree pruned annually is a short visit with a modest fixed price. Three or four trees in the same garden on the same day cost less per tree than three separate visits. A neglected tree that needs staged restoration is quoted per stage. Anything that needs an arborist is a different conversation and a different price, and I will tell you if that is where your tree sits rather than pretending it is a job for a ladder.

I quote tree pruning in Magill, Campbelltown, Athelstone, Norwood, Burnside and across Adelaide's eastern suburbs after a quick site visit, and the number you get is the number you pay. See tree pruning or ask for a quote.
